It started with an office romance and then falling in love with a craft that is centuries old, letterpress printing. Mickey & Jacqui started their new adventure together in life and in business. Mickey Loves Jacqui is their business designing and printing stationery that is tactile, charming and full of character.
The story...
Who would have thought our little spring office romance would have ended up in our own husband and wife business? Our story begins back in 2007 when we met at a marketing agency. Working together during this time was a fantastic foundation for our current working relationship - as you can imagine, a married couple working together can have its challenges. Mickey popped the question and we were married on New Year's Eve 2010. We longed to find an alternate print method for our own wedding stationery and stumbled across letterpress. We immediately fell in love with it. As a little surprise on our wedding day, Mickey created a small logo that ran throughout all of our stationery that said 'Mickey loves Jacqui'. On our honeymoon albeit after a couple of drinks, Mickey convinced us to buy an antique letterpress printer. For the next 6 months we plodded away with some lessons from friends in the print industry and then we were up and away with our own letterpress printing business!
What is your design aesthetic?
Our love of letterpress has grown and grown and we find that we design to the process' strengths. Beautifully constructed typography and line work, with high contrast patterns and imagery are definitely the best options for letterpress and foil stamping but we are always looking for new ideas!
Advice for couples when considering stationery?
With so many different printing techniques and cardstocks available, it is always best to see and feel them for yourselves! Check out samples and be up front with exactly what you are after for your own stationery. Get in touch with your designer early in the process as this will ensure that your stationery matches the aesthetic of your wedding. Also, parents are always after ways to help, ask them to start collecting addresses of your guests as soon as possible!
3 things you are loving right now in wedding stationery?
Storytelling. Couples are using stationery to tell the story of their romance, reflecting their personalities in the end product. It's great to hear their beautiful and sometimes very funny love stories.
Continuity. Gone are the days of a specific wedding theme, however continuity of design from save the dates and invitations through to wedding day stationery items like place cards and signage is becoming more popular.
Multiple Processes. Letterpress and foil components on the same piece is the ultimate in sophisticated stationery. Digital print and letterpress or foiling can also be very effective. The clever use of different print processes together or on separate pieces can also create something very special.
