"I am drawn to a simple silhouette with intricate detailing and tailoring. My aesthetic evolves with time and with my experiences."

At the age of 19 he completed his fashion studies and was quickly recognised for the quality of his workmanship and his eye for design. Rising through several bridal houses at just 22 years old he was appointed Head Designer. It was in 2003 that he launched his own fashion brand 'Steven Khalil' in Paddington, Sydney.

Steven's designs are renowned for their elegance and beauty, combining classical elements of bygone eras with a contemporary edge.

How do you work with couples; what is your design process?

I work very closely with a bride to achieve a balance between what she has dreamed of for her special day and what will make her look stunning and memorable at the same time. The process takes about 8 months for a custom gown and in this time my team and I work with the bride every step of the way- it’s a very personal experience for her and for me, it’s really special and I love it.

What does a typical day entail for you?

Usually pretty busy! I have client appointments all throughout the day- working with brides and private/celeb clients on looks for their wedding or red carpet/special events. I also have to manage my team and have meetings with my PR and production teams. Sometimes (if I am lucky!) I get to have lunch with a friend or catch up on social media. I have always loved working so I try to fill my day as much as possible.

Career highlight?

I don’t really have just one to be honest. I love seeing a bride shine on her big day, and I also get very humbled when a celebrity wears one of my designs on the red carpet or to an event. I have been very lucky to work with some incredible women and looking forward to working with many more!

What are you loving at the moment in fashion?

I am loving a return to simplicity in silhouette and cut - a more fitted shape and less drama means the fabric and tailoring can take centre stage.

Piece of advice for a bride when considering her gown?

I get asked this question quite often. I think the best piece of advice I could give a bride is to be open to design choices and to really think about what she wants to wear on her special day. Sometimes
a bride will come to me with an idea about what she thinks everyone else will love. I think it’s much more important for her to love what I have chosen and designed, after all it is her day!

A LITTLE MORE PERSONAL...

Do you collect anything?

I love design books and architecture - but I’m not a hoarder of anything in particular.

Do you have artists or designers that inspire you?

With any designer so many things can be used for inspiration. Colours, fabrics, images, textures - they all combine to give you a sense of inspiration. It really does depend on where I am or what I’m doing.

Favourite season?

Oh that’s tricky…Autumn I think. I love the colours and the weather of an Autumn in Sydney.

What are you reading now?

To be honest I’m not much of a reader. I’m really more visual. I have to read so much information every day for work, in my downtime I like to just relax and watch an interesting movie or play to reading a book.

Music on your playlist?

So much! And some of it's pretty embarrassing!

Fashion must have for you?

For myself I love a tailored blazer and a nice pair of loafers. I have too many to mention!

When there is down time where’s your favourite place?

I don’t really love loud places or too many people crammed into one space so I love being at home with friends or going to a nice restaurant where I can chat and be calm.

What don’t you leave home without?

My wallet- oh and my car keys. I drive everywhere and love the freedom driving gives me.

Favourite drink?

Tea. Black tea with sugar or Scotch & Dry to unwind.

Travel - your favourite destination and what is a must do?

I don’t get much chance to travel and this year it is something I am really trying to change. My favourite place is in Italy on the Bay of Naples, Sorrento. I stayed in a magnificent hotel perched on the cliffs and the views were stunning.

On your wish list right now?

Time. I know that sounds strange but I wish I had more time to complete more work and to also have more time to enjoy, it’s really precious and not something everyone has the luxury to accommodate in their lives.

Shops or online stores you frequent?

I don’t do a lot of shopping but when I do I still like to visit a boutique if I can. For special pieces in particular nothing beats trying it on, feeling the fabric then having it beautifully wrapped and taking it home.
