SCENTS & SENSABILITY

In the world of weddings, the perfect scent can become a timeless memory—a fragrant signature of the most special day in a couple's life. Today, we delve into the olfactory artistry that goes beyond mere perfume, exploring the essence of luxury fragrance with Nick Smart, the visionary Founder and Director of Agence de Parfum and Libertine Parfumerie.

What are some popular fragrance notes that work well for wedding day perfumes?

Floral notes work well — particularly white flowers. These notes tend to be delicate and feminine in character, and they echo beautifully the decorative bouquets and grace of the day. For something more masculine-leaning, I’d suggest aromatic notes, uplifting citrus or cool spice — or a combination of the two!

How can couples choose complementary scents for their big day?

I think the most important thing is to find a fragrance that reflects your personality. If, at the same time, you can find something that complements your partner's scent, then all the better. It’s also worth looking into “for him” and “for her” versions of a scent, as well as considering scents from a single collection.

What role does fragrance play in creating lasting memories of a wedding day?

It’s huge. Your fragrance will forever be synonymous with your special day. Scent is closely tied to memory and emotion, more so than any other sense, so the fragrance you wear will become inextricably linked. It’s miraculous, catching a trail of yours or your partner’s scent is like a time capsule of memories and emotions.

Should brides and grooms consider different fragrances for the ceremony and reception?

Why not? It’s your day! It’s by no means a must, but having two contrasting perfumes can perfectly reflect the distinct moods of the day. The ceremony is often more formal and emotionally charged, so a classic, elegant scent might be fitting, whereas the reception takes on a whole different energy. Here, you’d probably want to trade in for something bold and vibrant — something that screams “P.A.R.T.Y!”.

What are some tips for making the wedding day scent last all day and night?

Unscented lotion is a great hack. Moisturisers act as a fixative, allowing the perfume to hold for longer, extending the lifespan of a fragrance. First apply the lotion, then overlay with your scent!

What’s your advice for couples who want to create a signature scent together?

If by creating a signature scent you mean customise an original, then that’s quite a trick. Broadly speaking, my advice for couples wanting to share a fragrance is to start by sampling a wide range of perfumes to discover where your tastes align. Then you’ll begin to build a picture of which types of fragrance best represent you both.

What are some ways couples can incorporate their chosen fragrance into other aspects of their wedding, such as invitations or favours?

Lightly spraying invitations with your chosen scent is a lovely way to set the tone. At the venue, use matching scented candles to enhance the ambiance (Some perfumes offer fantastic home fragrance options too, which is perfect for extending the olfactory experience throughout your wedding.) In the bathrooms, incorporate hand wash and lotions in the same fragrance or similar, for a luxurious touch. Lastly, perfume miniatures or samples go down fantastically well as table gifts!

How can couples use scented candles to enhance the atmosphere and create a memorable sensory experience at their wedding?

Be strategic and play to the seasons. Think about what works well in a cooler climate as opposed to a warmer one — light and fresh for summer, amber and woods for winter, and so on. I would encourage you to position your candles in places like entrances, dining tables and cosy corners to really maximise their impact. The soft glow of a candle, let alone a whole curated space-full, is a beautiful addition to the day.
