Gitano, the upscale Mexican restaurant opens in Double Bay

Double Bay welcomes exciting new addition to its upmarket

dining scene with the opening of Gitano!

Prepare to journey through the flavours and stories of Mexico, the mouthwatering menu by Head Chef Alvaro ‘Clark’ Valenzuela will feature exotic flavours from various regions of Mexico, with a particular emphasis on Mexico City, Oaxaca, Puebla, the Yucatán Peninsula, and the coastal regions of Mexico, presented in a sharing style, staying true to Mexican tradition.


Originally from Mexico City, Valenzuela is best known for being one of the first chefs to bring traditional and modern Mexican food to Sydney with the opening of Chula in Potts Point, as well as for his work at Zepeda, Alegre Bar and Dining, Bodega1904 and Mañana to name a few.

Ceviches and seafood dishes will also feature prominently on the menu, as well as Mexican traditional sauces using imported Mexican dried chillies and spices, such as Guajillo, Ancho, Pasilla to mention a few... and a wide selection of authentic-flavoured tacos.

All the meat on the menu is grass-fed, and in its commitment to serving healthy Mexican cuisine, the Gitano kitchen exclusively uses ghee and beef tallow, making it a vegetable oil-free restaurant.

Inspired by the neutral tones and rough textured beachfront bars of Tulum, Gitano’s décor sets the mood for long lunches shared with friends and dimly lite dinners enjoyed into the night.

As well as an upmarket culinary offer, Gitano will be home to an exciting new lounge bar with Latin/Afro house music and bottle service for revellers who may want to continue their night into the early morning akin to the leading restaurants and bars in Tulum and Mykonos.

  • KING FISH CEVICHE - Charred avocado, miso, daikon, crispy sweet potato, cancha.

  • TACOS HONGOS - Grilled mushrooms, huitlacoche pate, salsa verde, crispy brussels, aged manchego.

  • CHULETÓN CON - 500g, grass fed wagyu rib eye, chille guajillo butter, chimichurri

  • BROCCOLINI - White beans, salsa verde, pistachios, lemon, crispy shallots, chilli oil.

  • PAPAS BRAVAS - Twice cooked and fried kipfler potatoes, salsa diabla, aged manchego, chipotle cream.

  • CHURROS - Salted caramel ice cream, nut salsa, dulce de leche.
